How to Do a Birthday Party in Low Budget Mode

Set Your At-Home Birthday Party Budget

One of the best ways to save money is to know before you go. Which means, determine how much money you want to spend before you start planning. Because without limits, you’re inviting overspending.

Let’s suppose you have a larger budget and just want to save money. Who doesn’t, right? Well, you’ll also benefit from these helpful frugal tips. They’ll help you spend wisely while still creating a super-fun, memorable party.

Budget-Friendly DIY Party Decorations

You don’t need expensive decorations to make your home feel festive. Get creative and use what you have. Because you crafted a party with love, thought, and effort, it will mean that much more.

DIY Decorations That Look
Expensive But Are Actually Affordable

  • Balloon Wall or Arch - Use dollar store balloons and double-sided tape to balloonify your party space. Balloons really put the birthday in birthday party, too.
  • DIY Paper Garland – Cut out colorful circles, string them up, and hang them across the room. This is a super easy, inexpensive way to make your party festive.
  • Photo Booth Backdrop – Hang a bedsheet, curtain, or poster board covered with wrapping paper for a themed backdrop.
  • Twinkle Lights and Candles – If you have them, use fairy lights or candles to create a cozy atmosphere.
  • DIY Centerpieces – Fill mason jars with fairy lights, candies, flowers, or even crayons for a simple table setup.

Make It a Theme

Creating a theme is easy. Use items you already have at home and create something that aligns with your birthday person’s interests and hobbies. Some themes are especially good for kids. Others, are more universal age-wise. Here are some examples of universal themes you can create with items you have on hand:

  • Hat Decorating Theme - This theme is akin to a garden party or tea party. But with this, hat decorating is the main attraction. Have guests bring their own hats as one or two embellishments to share. Any color, any style. That's the fun. Then, as host, you supply a handful of embellishments to round everything out (beads, pompons, stickers, etc.) Have everyone create their own hat. Have contests like most creative hat.
  • Puzzle Party - For folks who like puzzles, a puzzle party could be an indulgent treat. Start with jigsaw puzzles, but look in closets and cupboards. Grab your crossword-type puzzles and your puzzle games.Put them out on the table and let guests go to town. If needed, pick a game you like and get others to join in. They'll be playing before you know it.
  • Slumber & Stories - For anybody who loves to snuggle up on the sofa, get cozy, eat popcorn, and listen to stories, this idea is for you. The stories can be spooky for autumn, magical for the Christmas season, or they can be about the family, about the person. Blend the personal stories in with the fictional stories so people can have a laugh and learn about their family tree at the same time.

Make your party all about the birthday person. Think of things they like and things that make you think of them. For example, once we created a nautical theme using a picture of the guest of honor in a sailor cap. The entire theme stemmed from his favorite picture. It was a hit because he was woven right into the theme and everyone thought it was so clever!
